Piercing Jewelry Materials: What’s Safe for Your Skin?
The jewelry you choose for a new piercing isn’t just an aesthetic decision — it directly affects how safely and comfortably your body heals. The wrong material can trigger allergic reactions, slow healing, or cause permanent scarring.
Implant-Grade Materials (Recommended)
- Implant-Grade Titanium (ASTM F136) – The gold standard. Nickel-free, lightweight, anodized for color, and biocompatible. Ideal for sensitive skin and initial piercings.
- Implant-Grade Steel (ASTM F138) – Widely used and affordable. Contains trace nickel but is safe for most people. Not recommended for those with confirmed nickel sensitivity.
- Solid 14k or 18k Gold – Safe for initial piercings when nickel-free. Avoid gold-plated or gold-filled, which can flake and irritate tissue.
- Niobium – Similar to titanium, nickel-free, and can be anodized. A great option for those with metal sensitivities.
- Borosilicate Glass – Smooth, non-porous, and body-safe. Excellent for healed piercings or those sensitive to all metals.
Materials to Avoid for New Piercings
- Acrylic & Plastic – Porous surfaces trap bacteria. Not sterilizable. Avoid entirely for healing piercings.
- Mystery alloys / “Surgical steel” without ASTM certification – Many cheap jewelry pieces are labeled “surgical steel” without meeting biocompatibility standards. Always verify the grade.
- Sterling silver – Tarnishes inside the piercing channel, causing irritation and grey staining of the skin (argyria).
- Brass & copper – Corrode easily and release toxic ions into healing tissue.
How to Verify Your Jewelry is Body-Safe
- Ask your piercer for the material certification (ASTM F136 for titanium, ASTM F138 for steel).
- Buy from APP-member studios or reputable suppliers like BVLA, Neometal, or Anatometal.
- Avoid marketplaces that don’t disclose alloy composition.
